Tourism Queensland in Australia advertised a job in January for "Caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef". Applicants had to submit a video online for public voting. Ben Southall, charity fundraiser from England, was selected from 16 finalists. There were 34000 applications worldwide, therefore quite a lot of publicity generated for this job. Interestingly, only one Australian made it to the finals.
His primary duty will be to promote the Great Barrier Reef to the world by blogging about his experience online. He'll be based on Hamilton Island with free lodging in a multi-million dollar villa. His contract is for six months and he'll be paid AU$150 000 (about R950 000 at time of writing). Not bad!
